Physical Examination
Regular physical examinations, are as important for your pet as they are for you. At Eastern Veterinary Clinic we recommend a complete physical examination for your pet at least once per year. Exams for dogs and cats typically include a thorough physical exam, heartworm blood test, blood profile to check internal organ function and a microscopic fecal examination to check for intestinal parasites.
Our physical examination usually starts at your pet's head and ends at its tail. We check eyes, ears, teeth, lungs & heart function, palpate the abdomen, observe the skin and take rectal temperature.
Routine examinations allow your veterinarian to determine the overall health of your pet. Examinations are also essential in detecting early problems before they become serious health issues. During the exam, your veterinarian may also discuss with you preventative healthcare for your pet. An examination is also a good time for your pet to get up-to-date on his or her vaccinations. Microchip Identification Implants
Microchip implants give your pet an additional source of identification in the unfortunate event he or she is lost or stolen. They are also important if your pet is traveling outside the country. To microchip your pet, we injects a tiny computer chip - about the size of a grain of rice - just under your pet's skin between the shoulder blades. The number on the chip, along with your personal contact information, is then entered into a national database for easy retrieval. Should your pet be lost, several veterinarians and establishments, each with scanners are immediately notified. In breeding establishments microchiping also insures identification of offspring from a particular lineage. Microchips can be injected at any time includung when we spay, neuter or vaccinate your pet. Eastern Veterinary Clinic uses the Trovan ID-100 BC identification system.
Dental Procedures
Dental disease and accidents can affect your pet at any time in its life. Like you, your pet's teeth must be given proper care from early in life. Infected teeth and gums, can cause pain which lead to lack of appetite. The infection itself can spread, leading to more serious infections and diseases.
All animals undergoing dental procedures are treated with the same care as animals undergoing surgery. To allow for the safest outcome, Eastern Veterinary Clinic requires all patients undergoing an anesthetic procedure to have a pre-operative health exam. We strongly encourage performing a diagnostic blood panel, to make sure they will be able to process the anesthetic. As animals will not stay still for a thorough dental evaluation, teeth cleaning and other dental work, general anesthesia with precise patient monitoring is necessary. We continuously monitor our patients respiratory rate, pulse, and temperature, to ensure the safest, minimum level of anesthetic necessary.

Vaccinations
Vaccines protect your pet from disease. At Eastern Veterinary Clinic our vaccination program is adjusted to protect your dog against 5 major canine diseases and 4 diseases of cats. Vaccination programs for dogs and cats begin at age 6 weeks. Up-to-date vaccinations keep your pet healthy. However, not every pet requires the same series or frequency of vaccines. Vaccination programs for dogs and cats begin at age 6 weeks. Most dogs are given three sets of vaccinations as a pup. However certain breeds such as Rotts and Dobermans are given five to seven boosters. Current research in veterinary medicine has linked over-vaccination in senior and geriatric pets with certain immune-related conditions. Our veterinarians tailor a vaccine protocol that is specific to your pet based on his or her lifestyle and immune status.
Since vaccine schedules are subject to change based on the most current information available, we recommend that you call our hospital for information about our vaccine protocols. Rabies vaccination is not commonly given to dogs in T&T, except when travel is necessary .

Surgery
Surgical procedures are a serious undertaking for your pet. If your pet requires surgery, our professional surgical team is ready for any emergency!
Pets brought to Eastern Veterinary Clinic for surgery are given a clean and sanitized kennel, a preoperative sedative formulated for your pet's weight, medical condition and breed is then administered to reduce pre-surgical anxiety. Before surgery, an intravenous catheter is taped into place. This allows the doctor to administer medications in a safe and expedient manner. With the IV catheter intact,an injectable anesthetic is administered. The attending veterinarian and assistant monitors your pet while the veterinary surgeon scrubs and dresses in a clean surgical outfit. We provide pain medication after surgery. During all surgical procedures, our patients are monitored. When the surgery is completed, an assistant or veterinarian remains with your pet until it is completely awake, ensuring that all vital signs are strong. Depending on the type of surgery,we may require your pet to spend a night recovering at the clinic. The recovery kennels are sanitized after each use and the complete post-surgery area is scrubbed daily with an antiseptic. Providing that you call ahead, you are welcome to visit your pet.

Spay/Castration/Vasectomy
At Eastern Veterinary Clinic we provide a safe and concerned surrounding for your pet's spay, castration or vasectomy. Although there is some debate as to the best time to spay your dog or cat, we at Eastern Veterinary Clinic recommend that dogs be spayed just after their first heat. For cats we recommend spaying at 6 months since it may be much harder to determine when they come into heat. Male cats or dogs can be castrated from 9 months onwards. If your pet is not intended for breeding, it has not been spayed or neutered, and is older than 9 months, we recommend the procedure as soon as possible.
The benefits of early spaying of female cats or dogs include: reducing the risk of mammary cancer by 90 percent; preventing uterine infections; eliminating heat cycles and preventing unwanted pregnancies.
The procedure consists of removing the ovaries and uterus.
The benefits of castrating male cats or dogs include: reducing the risk of prostate and testicular cancer; preventing roaming; reducing aggression and marking and reducing urine odor.
The procedure consists of removing the testicles.
There are risks of complication during surgery, however these are low and through routine monitoring we work to ensure the safe recovery of your pet. Following spay or castration your pet may gain some weight but in most instances will continue to have his or her own unique personality.
Vasectomy is sometimes recommended where the owner does not want to remove the testicles of the male dog. In this procedure, the tube which takes the sperms from the testicles to the penis is tied off and a piece is removed. The testicles themselves are left untouched. The male thus continues with normal physiological function but is sterile.
